Initial and Advanced GPD Courses
 
The BMDTS Security Division's GPD (General Purpose Dog) courses
and examinations are accredited by the
British Institue Of Professional Dog Trainers (BIPDT), Security Division.

The GPD (General Purpose Dog) training courses are made up of a variety of modules that include basic obedience, agility, operational searches and tracking, man work, and theory.

By the end of the courses, the trainees will have achieved, and be examined on the following criteria and exercises...


 
Initial Course

General obedience and control
• Heel work on the lead including all paces and halting positions
• Five minute down stay with handler out of sight
• Two minute sit stay with handler out of sight

Agility
•  2.5ft clear jump
• 6ft long jump
• 4.5ft scale
• 6ft A-frame

Open Searches
• The dog and handler will demonstrate finding, indicating, and - if required - retrieving property in a specified area
• The dog and handler will demonstrate quartering and searching for a missing person
• The dog, on finding a missing person, will indicate by barking readily

Building Searches
• The dog and handler will demonstrate finding, indicating, and - if required - retrieving property in part of a building, on and off the lead
• The dog and handler will demonstrate quartering, searching, and indicating missing persons in part of a building, on and off the lead
• The dog, on finding a missing person, will indicate by barking readily

Man Work
• The dog will demonstrate protection of the handler against an attacking criminal
•  The dog will chase and stop a fleeing criminal
•  The dog will demonstrate the required control whilst the handler searches the criminal

Theory
•  Arresting, questioning, and detaining procedures
• A basic understanding of kennel management and hygiene
• A basic understanding of grooming
• A basic understanding of first aid
• A basic understanding of dog nutrition



Advanced Course

The advanced GPD training course takes both dog and handler to a comprehensive level in the initial six modules and includes both theory and practical aspects of operational tracking.

Advanced obedience and control
•  Heel work on the lead including all paces and halting positions
•  Heel work off the lead including all paces and halting positions
• Ten minute down stay with handler out of sight

Advanced Agility
All jumps will be demonstrated off the lead with full control
•  3ft clear jump
•  9ft long jump
• 6ft scale
• 8ft A-frame
• Maintaining basic fitness and alertness of both dog and handler

Advanced Open Searches
• The dog and handler will demonstrate finding, indicating, and - if required - retrieving property in a large, open area
• The dog and handler will demonstrate quartering and searching for missing persons in an open area
• The dog, on finding a missing person, will indicate by barking readily
• The dog will demonstrate the required control will the handler questions and searches the criminal

Advanced Building Searches
• The dog and handler will demonstrate finding, indicating, and - if required - retrieving property in a building, or part of a building, on and off the lead
• The dog and handler will demonstrate quartering, searching, and indicating missing persons in a building, or part of a building, on and off the lead
• The dog, on finding a missing person, will indicate by barking readily
• The dog will demonstrate the require control while the handler questions and searches the criminal

Advanced man work
•  Straight chase and bite of a fleeing criminal
•  A straight chase and stand off
• A straight chase and emergency recall
• Once found, to detain a criminal and to bite automatically if the criminal tries to flee
• Handler protection against stick attack and gun attack
•  The dog and handler will demonstrate dealing with a basic public order scenario
•  The dog and handler will demonstrate dealing with a passive demonstration

Tracking
• Operational tracks up to three hours old
•  Tracks away from building or vehicle
•  Night tracks
• Including recovery of property and persons

Theory
•  Arrestable offences and basic law
•  Arresting, questioning, and detaining procedures
•  Kennel management
•  Animal husbandry
•  Grooming
•  First aid
•  Animal nutrition
• Law regarding use of dogs within the security industry
